Audit Accounting

To audit is essentially to evaluate a system, organization, process or project.  Auditors examine a company’s internal controls and the reliability and validity of information.  An auditor can only assure that a company’s records are reasonably free from error. In the past audits were concerned primarily with financial matters, but today environmental audits, for example, are performed. An audit is basically concerned with fairness in the presentation of financial records by a company.

Internal auditors are hired by a company to evaluate its financial records.  They report to the board of directors or to top executives. They are often on the lookout for fraud. External auditors are independent accountants sent by an accounting firm to evaluate the financial statements of clients.  This is done primarily on an annual basis.

The Internal Revenue Service is a large employer of auditors.
