Public Accounting

Public accountants may be involved in a wide range of functions, including auditing, tax accounting, assisting in the design of employee health care benefits, the construction of data support systems and controls for asset protection. Others perform auditing services and insure that statements have been accurately prepared. Many of these accountants are CPAs or Certified Public Accountants and may be self-employed or work for public accounting firms.

Public accountants also may engage in forensic accounting, investigating securities frauds and embezzlement, contract disputes, bankruptcies and money laundering. They may work closely with law enforcement and/or appear as expert witnesses.

The accounting scandals of the 1990s have led to stronger Federal regulations which restrict the services of the public accountant. If the accountant performs an audit for a company he can no longer advise on investments, human services or legal issues.
